When Kato, a South Sudanese refugee, pastor, and African Leadership teacher was falsely accused of murder and imprisoned, he was suddenly facing the death penalty and seemingly beyond reach. We thought the need was obvious: we had to get him out. And quick.

GOD HAD A DIFFERENT PLAN

Over the next three years, God’s plan had Kato preaching the Gospel in prison. He led many of his fellow inmates to Jesus. When he was released, Kato came out forever changed; now he had a calling. His life’s work was to continue his ministry in the prisons. The inmates, now his friends, still needed him.

He turned to African Leadership, and sought out Tito, AL’s Continental Coordinator, saying, “This is what God’s calling me to. This is what I need for my prison ministry.” Tito listened and acted. God has given a privileged role to our African Leadership team. Tito and others are honored to walk alongside men and women who have been forever changed by God. They are called to a life’s work bigger than themselves.

Like you and me, Kato is often overwhelmed. What if it doesn’t work? Where will the money come from? Will anyone care? Kato is able to take these questions to Tito and others who remind him that he is not alone. He has allies, men and women, who walk with him into the fear, questions, and uncertainty, encouraging and reminding him of who he is and what God has called him to do.

Over the past year, Kato’s ministry has brought over 290 prisoners and several prison officials to Christ. God has leveraged Africans and Americans to fulfill Kato’s vision because it doesn’t just take a man, it takes the global church.
